Tartan Pride is a team of premier level highland dancers from
the Joan Murray School of Dance. Formed in 1994, the
team consists of 16-24 young women aged 14 years to adult all
of whom are experienced competitive highland dancers. These
soloists now perform as a colourful team often accompanied by
a piper, pipe band or Celtic band.
Tartan Pride is renowned for its exciting
performances, both local and international. Tartan Pride
performs traditional Highland dances such as the Highland
Fling and Scottish National dances like the Blue
Bonnets. Their uniqueness however, is based on the
choreography of
Joan Murray
who has created numerous dances with a Canadian flare. Her
dances use both modern and traditional music as well as both
Irish and Scottish steps. Many of the choreographies
have won awards including Tartan Pride Medley, The
Rankin Sword, and Welcome to Glasgow.
Annually, Tartan Pride awards a scholarship to up and
coming dancers and an aggregate trophy to a deserving member
within their ranks. The trophy used was presented to the team
by the folks of Creetown, Scotland, when Tartan Pride visited
in 2000.
